A unique participatory arts project for young people with learning disabilities
Breakaway is a participatory arts project for young people with learning disabilities. Our weekly sessions include music, dance, drama, visual arts and live performance, but they also support the personal development and progression of the young people.
What makes this project different to other participatory arts projects for young people with LD is that Breakaway includes a programme of personal and emotional development that is streamed through the whole project. The project brings people together young people who share a common interest in music, drama, dance, and art, helping them to develop skills as an artist, and also as a person. There is space to talk about the things that are important to them and the challenges that they face. Performances are worked to depict real life stories and help to get the stories of disabled people's lives across to the community.
Individuals gain independence, confidence, and self esteem through their participation in the project.
There are currently regular weekly sessions running in Worksop and Beeston.
Our Worksop session runs from 04:30pm - 07:30pm and our Beeston session runs from 03:30pm - 06:00pm.
We are able to organise transport from schools to our session in Beeston
